Maine near its confluence of the R. Loire and (<em>surprising as it may seem<\/em>) it\u2019s Wigan\u2019s twin town in France.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-156\" title=\"R. It depicts\u00a0the story of the Apocalypse\u00a0from the Book of\u00a0Revelations\u00a0by St John\u00a0and was\u00a0commissioned\u00a0by \u00a0Louis I in 1377<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-161\" title=\"Tapestry\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city itself is based on the Roman town called Juliomagus and many Roman finds have been unearthed over the years including a 6<sup>th<\/sup> century Christian necropolis and a large amphitheatre.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162\" title=\"Roman remains\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/07-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On our first visit we where hosted by the head of antiquities for the district Monsieur Jean Bordeur who gave us an exclusive guided tour around the castle including the \u2018Apocalypse\u2019 tapestry &#8211; and also\u00a0excavations in the grounds of the castle where they were uncovering evidence of Roman occupation.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163\" title=\"M. Brodeur\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/08-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On our second trip we visited the Musee Jean-Lurcat which, although looking like a church, turns out to be the old Hospital of St Jean.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-165\" title=\"Musee Jean-Lurcat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/11-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was founded in 1174 by King Henry II of England. It remained a hospital until 1865 when it was converted into the city\u2018s Antiquities Museum.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-167\" title=\"Hospital de St Jean\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/14-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1967 it became the home of the Song of the World Tapestry. (<em>80 meters long, the series of ten tapestries of Jean Lur\u00e7at, it was designed and woven between 1957 and 1966. It\u2019s a modern vision of the world, seen through the eyes of an artist whose outlook was influenced by the carnage of two world wars. It was designed during the Cold War with its threat of the atomic bomb wiping out the world, a threat which also plays a part in the images. Boisbouvier (a college lecturer in archaeology)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-171\" title=\"M. Cousin again who took us around some of the site around the Angers district. Cousin then took us to a winery near Saumur where the proprietor was keen to show us his underground cellars and tempt us with some of his wine.<a This is where allied forces in the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> WW defeat two German armies and wipe out a complete SS division. <em>Special mention went to a small Polish contingent who despite severe losses sealed the gap between Falaise and Argentan and prevent the Germans from escaping.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-225\" title=\"Monte Ormel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/280.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/280-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/280-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the second and third trip we visited Falaise itself<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/282.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-227\" title=\"Falaise gate house\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/282.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/282-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/282-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>which is a beautiful medieval walled city overlooked by a huge castle which was once occupied by William the Conqueror.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/286.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-229\" title=\"Falaise castle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/286.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/286-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/286-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On our last visit to Angers we set off earlier to give us time to visit a site in Britain before catching the midnight ferry at Portsmouth. The site we visited was the Roman villa of Littlecote near Hungerford in Wiltshire.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/290.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-230\" title=\"Littlecote Roman Villa\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/290.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/290-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/290-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This particular villa is famous for its Triclinium with its beautiful mosaic depicting scenes from mythic legend including Orpheus, Bacchus and Apollo.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/291.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-231\" title=\"Littlecote Triclinium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/291.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/291-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/291-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TheTudor Mansion at Littlecote is Grade I listed but is also a hotel where you can stay (apparently it was here that Henry VIII wooed Jane Seymour).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/293.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-232\" title=\"Littlecote Hall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/293.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/293-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/293-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On our way back from Anger that year we caught another site at Oisseau le Petit\u00a0on the road between Le Mans and Rouen\u00a0\u2013 a little town which once was a huge Roman city occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries. \u00a0One of the main structures to have been discovered during excavations is this fine temple or Fanum (which has had its upper structure reconstructed).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-235\" title=\"Oisseau le Petit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/301.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/301-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/301-398x300.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le Lac de Maine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On all three trips we stayed at Le Lac de Maine hostel on the outskirts of Angers, which, although not the Ritz, was certainly value for money.
